Spirit Day: Go Purple on October 20 for LGBT Youth

Millions of people around the world wear purple on Spirit Day as a sign of support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth and to speak out against bullying. Spirit Day was started in 2010 by teenager Brittany McMillan as a response to the young people who had taken their own lives. Observed annually on October 20, individuals, schools, organizations, corporations, media professionals and celebrities wear purple, which symbolizes spirit on the rainbow flag. Getting involved is easy -- participants are asked to simply "go purple" on October 20 as we work to create a world in which LGBT teens are celebrated and accepted for who they are.

National Coming Out Day

abbyndc — Sun, 09/25/2011 - 1:05am
Event Date:
Thu, 10/11/2012 (All day)

Every October 11, thousands of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and allies celebrate National Coming Out Day. They hold workshops, speak-outs, rallies and other kinds of events all aimed at showing the public that LGBT people are everywhere.

But what's so special about October 11? How did that become a day aimed at encouraging LGBT people to come out and be honest about themselves?

Visit the Human Rights Campaign website for history about this special day. They also have information for those interested in coming out, specific information for bisexuals/transgenders/people of color, and straight allies and supporters.

This year National Coming Out Day is on the second Tuesday of October, which is the same day as the monthly DC Bi Women meeting and dinner. If I hear of any National Coming Out Day events to share, I'll post an update. Thanks.
